Identity verification through Vouchsafe if I don't have photo ID

Vouchsafe is certified against the UK Government's digital identity and attributes trust framework to help people confirm their identity when they don't have good photo ID.

Who can vouch for me?

A trusted referee is someone you know personally or professionally who can confirm that you are who you say you are. Examples include family members, close friends, coworkers, managers, NHS GP/nurse, social workers, teachers, or civil servants.

You should choose someone who:

  • Knows you well enough to confirm your identity
  • Is over 18 and has their own valid ID to verify themselves

What does the referee need to do?

When you provide your referee's contact details, we'll send them a unique link by email or text message. They'll be asked to check and confirm your personal details are correct and verify their own identity. The process takes about five minutes on a mobile device or computer — no app required. It's not a character reference — they're simply confirming you are who you claim to be.

Information for referees

If you've received a message from Vouchsafe asking you to vouch for someone, the person you know has actively named you as a trusted contact and shared your details with us.

We need to check that you're a real person and that you know the person you're vouching for. Your details are never shared with marketing companies or added to any mailing list.

The process takes about five minutes. You'll be asked how long you've known the person, check their personal details are correct, and verify your own identity.

Declining to vouch

You can decline at any point if you don't feel comfortable or don't know them well enough. When you decline, Vouchsafe will remove your information, and the other person will be asked to choose a new referee.
